A Account of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book lodging after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was taking place and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I caught public transport and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I could pass the night in a place that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal at my peak to succeed at an interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared confused since a woman noticed me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and without hesitation she offered I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot to rest to sleep.
In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she took being a woman allowing a man she had only just encountered crash at her place. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish the universe has returned her generosity abundantly. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
