On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win a short time later. Yet, that early success remains his only top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” the manager said when questioned about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced just after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

As trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by in excess of one hundred injury setbacks from the beginning of last season.

Arteta is tied down by 18 months to run on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, highlighting the constant necessity to prove his worth. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, praising the strong backing from the board and owners, yet identifying the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team approaches the upcoming game coping with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is expected to see him miss action for several weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the injury crisis and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are vastly different from when he began his reign.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”

He finished by saying, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
