Bellingham Needs to Cut Out the Petulance to Secure a Key Place In Tuchel.

For Bellingham to wants to fight his way once again into the English strongest team, it would be smart to cut out the unnecessary reactions. His response after noticing that his number was going up after an evening of inconsistency in the match against Albania was not good enough.

"I’d rather not make more out of it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the squad members who enter the game," commented the coach. "Decisions are made and you must accept them when you're on the field."

The midfielder must understand. There was no call for an outburst. Harry Kane had recently scored to make England two goals ahead in a dead rubber qualifier, with only six minutes remaining and the player, who had not played particularly well, received a caution for bringing down the Albanian striker. This was hardly a debatable decision. Indeed it might have been reckless for the manager to not substitute him considering it was possible he would be suspended of the opening game of the tournament by picking up a another booking.

Drawing Attention on Himself

However, the player drew all eyes toward himself. No one could overlook the young midfielder's annoyance as he realized that he was going to make way for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and while he accepted the coach's hand while heading to the sideline it was obvious that Tuchel was displeased.

This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He applauded Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for the captain to nod home his second of the night, but everything else was counterproductive. There was no chance protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has talked so much about honoring the team structure and the value of behaving correctly.

In the Spotlight

The midfielder, left out of the previous squad, is being watched carefully upon his return to the fold recently. Essentially his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to coming off the pitch as the side wrapped up a ideal group stage by overcoming a spirited effort from the Albanian team.

The Coach's Plan

It means it's unclear on if the squad function at their best including Bellingham. The evidence here was inconclusive. There was experimentation by the coach at the start. He has given England organization and direction lately, building with a holding player, a box-to-box player, an attacking midfielder and specialist wingers, but the approach changed against Albania. Jarell Quansah was handed his international debut, Wharton made his first start internationally and the role of the defender as a makeshift midfielder created a passing resemblance to the Manchester club's historic treble-winning side.

Mixed Performance

Bellingham had ups and downs. He made a chance for Eze during the second half but at times seemed too desperate to impress. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. An unnecessary confrontation with a rival player in the early stages. The team looked disjointed for much of the second half. One Albania chance resulted from Bellingham squandered possession. His booking occurred when he was dispossessed to Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.

Substitutes Decide

Finally the squad's strength made the difference. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who seemed more comfortable to the role in which Bellingham operated earlier in the match, and Bukayo Saka. Eventually Saka whipped in a set-piece for Kane to score the first goal. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks are going to be vital in the upcoming tournament.

Relationship Not Broken

Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The quality of the winger's delivery for Kane's goal was partly forgotten in the ridiculousness of the player change. After the final whistle, the focus was on the midfielder. Tuchel came over to his side and pushed the Real Madrid midfielder towards the travelling England fans. The bond between them remains intact. Tuchel is not willing to abandon him at this stage. However, whether the coach is prepared to grant him centre stage is not guaranteed.
