Blast Costs Three Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Action in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house near Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.
All three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals got detained at the location and one more individual who escaped after the blast was apprehended soon after. The trio have been transported to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene displayed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the incident included 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.
According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a level above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
