‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from rehabilitation to goals with the Basque club

Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker played in English soil, an teenage appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in England, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did their duty: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the attacker says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu airport and another flight to England, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, partially owing to the requirements of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are unique and debuting in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he states.

He considered it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but I look back on it as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it helps. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then head home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. He left emotionally in that year, aged 23, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the previous season which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
