Sahil Arora, in his twenties, found himself excitedly waiting to view the latest Hindi film release starring his preferred performer.

However going to the theatre set him back considerably - a admission at a metropolitan multi-screen cinema cost 500 rupees $6, roughly a one-third of his weekly allowance.

"I liked the picture, but the cost was a sore point," he said. "Popcorn was an additional ₹500, so I skipped it."

Many share his experience. Increasing admission and concession prices suggest cinema-goers are decreasing on their outings to cinema and shifting towards less expensive digital choices.

Data Show a Story

In the past five years, figures shows that the average cost of a film ticket in India has increased by 47%.

The Average Ticket Price (ATP) in two years ago was ninety-one rupees, while in 2024 it rose to 134 rupees, according to audience research information.

Research findings notes that visitor numbers in Indian theatres has reduced by approximately six percent in recent times as versus last year, perpetuating a pattern in modern times.

Modern Cinema Standpoint

A key causes why attending cinema has become pricey is because single-screen theatres that offered cheaper entries have now been mostly replaced by premium modern theatres that offer a variety of amenities.

But cinema proprietors maintain that ticket rates are reasonable and that audiences still visit in significant quantities.

A top representative from a leading cinema network stated that the perception that audiences have ceased going to movie halls is "a common perception inserted without confirmation".

He says his chain has noted a attendance of 151 million in 2024, increasing from approximately 140 million in the previous year and the statistics have been encouraging for this year as well.

Value for Money

The official acknowledges obtaining some responses about elevated admission prices, but says that patrons persist in turn up because they get "value for money" - assuming a production is good.

"It's a vicious cycle," notes a specialist. "As visitor numbers are low, theatre operators lack resources for adequate upkeep. And because the theatres fail to be properly cared for, moviegoers refuse to view pictures there."

Throughout the city, only a small number of older theatres still operate. The remainder have either shut down or entered deterioration, their old buildings and old-fashioned services a reminder of a previous period.

Memory vs Reality

Certain visitors, though, remember traditional cinemas as simpler, more community spaces.

"We would have numerous audience members packed in simultaneously," remembers elderly a longtime patron. "Those present would cheer when the actor came on display while sellers offered cheap snacks and beverages."

But this sentiment is not experienced by everyone.
