Israelis commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza

- After-conflict management of the territory
