Lethal Combat Erupt Between the Hamas movement and Gaza-based Family Group in the Gaza Strip
Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza saw some of the most intense domestic fighting since the conflict started, between Hamas security forces against gunmen from the al-Mujaida family - among the biggest families in the southern region.
According to Hamas, its security personnel conducted a raid in the area to apprehend people suspected of collaborating with Israeli authorities.
Conversely, eyewitness reports detailed an offensive by around fifty armed individuals using five pickup trucks, carrying automatic weapons and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, who entered forcefully the al-Mujaida neighborhood and fatally shot five individuals from the clan.
Clan fighters immediately retaliated, initiating hours-long clashes with heavy exchanges of fire.
Accounts circulating on online platforms – hard to authenticate – indicate that over eleven Hamas personnel were fatally wounded, with multiple remains reportedly paraded in the streets.
Footage widely shared online, that haven't been confirmed, seem to depict several wounded casualties in combat uniforms, accompanied by a voiceover alleging they belonged to Hamas's "military division".
Additional footage showed sustained shooting and an RPG hitting a residential building in the neighborhood.
Local elders subsequently stepped in to facilitate talks between the opposing groups, resulting in an exchange of bodies intended to control the escalation.
Even though the precise reasons continue to be ambiguous, the confrontation has intensified apprehension among Palestinians.
A significant number worry that abundance of firearms, tensions between powerful families and Hamas's grip on power could develop into scenes similar to civil war in a territory already experiencing population movement, destruction, and anxiety of additional disorder.
