Putin Vows Continuous Oil Supplies to the Indian Nation in Defiance of American Demands
During a unambiguous statement to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “continuous” deliveries of oil to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in New Delhi and affirmed their bilateral ties were “resilient to external pressure.”
A Signal Directed at the United States
The statement, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at Washington, who have sought to compel New Delhi into curtailing its close links with Moscow. The context is in response to recent US actions, such as the imposition of import duties targeting New Delhi because of its acquisition of Russian oil.
“Our nation is a reliable exporter of energy resources and everything required for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president said. “Moscow stands willing to continue ensuring the consistent supply of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
The Indian leader, without referencing crude specifically, supported the sentiment by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and important pillar of the bilateral cooperation.”
Challenging American Pressure
Prior to the meeting, in a media interview, Putin had criticized Washington's stance over India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “When Washington has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India have the same privilege?”
Putin's arrival represented his first visit to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a deliberate show to display that the bond between the men remained intact.
An Unusual Reception
Taking an rare gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders embraced warmly as close allies before enjoying a private dinner together.
