The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
