UN Ends Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit
Security Council representatives approved to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip the following week.
He was appointed provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out the previous leader in December 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.
He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction the HTS movement, once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted the group from its registry of foreign terror groups during July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for assisting the country and its population."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened for the first time in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit will not be Sharaa's first trip to the US during this period. In September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
